Dr Joanna d'Arcy, MBChB MD DAvMed FRCP

I qualified from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, and undertook my specialist cardiology training in Oxford. I became a consultant in 2013, and have a consultant post with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working at both the John Radcliffe Hospital and the Horton Hospital in this capacity.

Expertise

I have a breadth of experience across the field of cardiology, and see patients with a wide variety of heart-related symptoms and conditions, for example chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, angina, heart failure, and heart valve conditions.

I have extensive experience in cardiovascular imaging, which is an essential part of the diagnosis and optimal management in a broad range of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, valve disease and heart failure. As part of my training, I undertook research involving the use of echocardiography and cardiac MRI.

Aviation cardiology

Through my involvement in Aviation Medicine clinics, I have accrued a wealth of experience in Aviation Cardiology. I am very familiar with civilian and military requirements for licensing, for both pilots and ATCOs. I can assess and investigate aircrew and controllers required by the relevant licensing authorities, with access to a wide range of diagnostic techniques. My familiarity with the requirements of reports for aircrew ensures that all of the necessary information required for re-licensing is conveyed promptly, minimising the delays in aircrew and controllers returning to work.

I hold the Diploma in Aviation Medicine and I am a visiting senior lecturer at King's College London on the Diploma course. I also regularly teach on a variety of Av Med courses and have presented at national and international meetings on Aviation Cardiology. I am co-chair of an international working group developing guidelines in this area, and have published articles relating to this.

Hobbies & Interests

I have two teenage children, who occupy a lot of my time. When I'm not chasing around after them, I enjoy running, swimming and cycling. I have completed a half-ironman triathlon, and in 2019 I completed my first ultra-marathon. I am an avid reader and Marvel film fan!
